Saturday's are a day I want to post off topic items, and while last week was a recipe from my November Scrappin and Stampin Getaway, this weekend I am going to share another recipe, this time from my Aunt Peg.
Aunt Peg passed away last Sunday at the age of 96! She came to America as a teenager from Ireland, and was a rock in our family. As my mom's cousin said during the funeral mass - she never complained, and knew who every cousin was and what they were doing and who their kids were and their kids were... not in a nosy way, but in a way that kept the extended family connected. While she didn't have any of her own children, everyone felt special to Aunt Peg! This was her mother's recipe, so that makes it my great grandmother's....and I am s haring it with you!
Irish Soda Bread
5 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
3 teaspoons Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 tbs butter
2 cups buttermilk (or use regular milk with 2 tsp vinegar added to make 2 cups)
8 oz raisins
caraway seeds ( I don't use them so don't know how many)
1. Combine dry ingredients in large bowl, wet ingredients in a second bowl. I will melt the butter in the microwave first and then add the milk to it.
2. Fold the wet into the dry ingredients until combined. Your dough will be sticky, not to worry!
3. Bake in greased cast iron skillet or two cake pans or individual loaf pans. I also have been taught to make a cross in the dough in the pan to let out the evil spirits (are the Irish superstitious???) and sprinkle some more sugar on the top. Then put into a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.
Everyone loves taking baby pictures. Cute little ones on their backs or their stomachs, making adorable faces or getting into funny situations.
Getting a good picture of your little one once their more mobile, however, can become a bit more of a challenge.
Often, they're moving from one thing to another so quickly that, by the time you're set up, you've missed the shot.
Here are a few tips for capturing those fast-moving kids:
1. Use a fast shutter speed. Sports photographers know the only way to really capture the action is to take the kind of shot that freezes time. Set your shutter speed for 1/500th of a second or higher and you'll be able to avoid most blurry photos... even if you're moving your camera to track your subject when you snap the picture!
2. Use a flash. Sometimes, in low-light situations, you won't be able to shoot at a very high shutter speed. In those situations, a flash will do a fair job accomplishing the same benefit as the first tip.
3. Shoot wide. Don't worry about getting too close to your fast-moving subject. You run the risk of cutting them off at the edge of your shot. Instead, shoot a wider angle. That way, you have more choices for composition when you edit the photos later. And don't worry about cropping too much when you edit. Most of today's cameras have enough megapixel power that you won't lose resolution no matter how much you zoom in for your edits!
Employ these three tips consistently and you'll find a lot more action photos to choose from when you're putting together your scrapbook pages

How cute is she? After the Kids Thanksgiving Stamp Camp, one of the campers mom's went home and made these for her table, her friends table...lots of these birds around today! For this week's Way to Use it Wednesday, I am going to share a technique using the brayer. Did you know that there are over 50 techniques using brayers? That's why I named my team of demonstrators the Beantown Brayers, there are as many different ways to run a rubber stamping and scrapbooking business with Stampin Up as there are techniques for brayers (well, almost!). Don't forget to mark your calendar for January 9th's Opportuni-Tea to find out more!
Directions:
1) Heat emboss your chosen images on Glossy White card stock using VersaMark ink and Clear Stampin' Emboss powder. Bold images work best for this technique.
2) Ink your brayer with a light color of ink, and bray your card stock.
3) Use a sticky note or scrap paper cut to desired shapes and sizes to cover portions of your card stock.
4) Ink your brayer with a darker color of ink, and bray your card stock again.
5) Repeat process if extra layers desired.
6) Remove paper scraps and wipe embossed images to remove excess ink.
